the interior lives of women:
the life & art of anna catherine wiley

a video recording of THE INTERIOR LIVES OF WOMEN in June 2022.

It’s 1900ish…

…& Anna Catherine Wiley, an impressionist painter from Knoxville, Tennessee, is rapidly rising to fame… but is destined to fall just as quickly as a number of personal and professional losses culminated in a "mental breakdown" in 1929 that landed her in an institution where she would die 30 years later, having never painted again.

Or at least that was the story as it was known to the few surviving family members, artists, and historians who still knew Wiley's name. But in 2020, I began a journey with director Chris Williams to find out what really happened… and what we found was really surprising.

characters

ANNA CATHERINE WILEY is a wild little thing who grows into a wilder adult.

NELL WILEY is Kate’s sister and is, admittedly, just not quite as good at anything as her sister is.

LLOYD BRANSON is the love interest, if there had been one. those were only rumors.

the NARRATOR becomes the ANNOUNCER & vice versa… it gets a little confusing, but just roll with it.

A fascinating and anarchic twist on the biographical play. — eric matthew richardson, playwright & songwriter
